CBD Intersection Ambush Shakes Motorists at Walter Sisulu and Beatty

Traffic intersections across the Witbank central business district have long functioned as high-risk waiting zones during peak congestion hours, a reality reinforced by a recent opportunistic robbery at a busy traffic node.

On August 15, 2026 around 6 at night, local motorist navigating the central commercial hub was stationary at the traffic intersection connecting Walter Sisulu Street and Beatty Avenue when the incident occurred. According to police reports filed at the Witbank station, two unknown perpetrators approached a car unobserved while it idled in traffic.

Taking advantage of the brief delay in the flow of vehicles, the suspects yanked open a rear door of the vehicle, slipped inside, and brandished knives to intimidate the driver. Overpowered by the sudden close-quarters threat, the motorist was forced to surrender a personal mobile device before the attackers vanished on foot into the surrounding pedestrian crowds.

Local law enforcement and community policing forums (CPF) have urged motorists to exercise extreme caution in the CBD, particularly during evening hours. Authorities have advised drivers to remain highly vigilant of their surroundings and, when safe to do so late at night, to cautiously navigate intersections to avoid becoming stationary targets.
