So how exactly is Chlorine used in our Municipal water?

Chlorine gas is used in water treatment primarily as a powerful disinfectant to destroy disease-causing microorganisims. It ensures that tap water is safe to drink by the time it reaches consumers.

Here is how the process works:
Core Uses in Water Treatment
    • Disinfection (Primary Purpose): Chlorine gas is injected into the water to kill bacteria, viruses, and parasites. It effectively prevents widespread waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery.
    • Residual Protection: A major advantage of chlorine is that a small, safe amount stays in the water as it flows through the pipeline network. This “residual chlorine” continuously protects the water from re-contamination before it reaches household taps.
    • Oxidation: Chlorine oxidizes naturally occurring iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfide in raw water. This converts them into solid particles that can easily be filtered out, improving the water’s taste, odor, and clarity.
    • Algae Control: It prevents the growth of algae and slime inside the treatment plant’s tanks, filters, and pipes, keeping the infrastructure clean.

How It Is Applied
    1. Dosing: Highly compressed liquid chlorine gas is stored in heavy-duty cylinders. It is converted back into a gas and precisely metered into the water using a device called a chlorinator.
    2. Contact Time: The chlorinated water is held in large contact tanks for a specific duration to ensure all pathogens are thoroughly destroyed before the water is distributed to the public.
