A security company has alerted the public about a rise in break-ins where thieves are getting in through the roofs of buildings and homes. In many of these cases, the alarm panel or antenna is accessed via the roof, and sometimes it’s even installed there. The criminals then damage the panel or antenna, which stops alarm signals from reaching the control room.

Thieves have figured out that houses with tile roofs are easy targets. Roof tiles can be quickly removed, and breaking through the ceiling boards to get inside is a breeze. Many roofs have turned into the weakest entry point, and burglars are exploiting this at both commercial and residential properties. Once they get into the roof space, burglars often find the alarm system by tracing the cables and then proceed to yank out or cut all the wires to disable the alarm.

Another security firm noted that in some instances, burglars first break into a bathroom, where alarm sensors are typically absent, and then access the roof from there. While criminals accessing buildings through the roof isn’t a new issue, the recent increase in incidents is a serious concern for those who need to secure their properties.

Outdoor detection beams can be strategically placed around your property to trigger the alarm before a thief can reach the building itself. Another option to consider is microwave Passive Infra-Red detectors, which are specifically designed for very hot areas, like roofs. Regular infra-red detectors aren’t as effective in extremely hot conditions.
