No good news for Motorists – No progress at licensing office

The Department of Employment and Labour (DOL) is gearing up for an inspection while building renovations are moving forward without any concrete timelines in sight.

Two months have passed since the old licensing office got shut down over unsafe working conditions, and nothing has changed.

Zandile Mavuso, spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, explained that the local municipality is currently fixing up the building after the Department of Employment and Labour (DOL) locked it down on July 16.

‘We don’t have a specific timeline for when these renovations will wrap up, but we’re committed to keeping our communities in the loop’ Mavuso shared.

When Witbank News stopped by, they found the place pretty much empty—furniture shoved to the side and a small team putting down tiles in the area where learner’s licences get issued.

The DOL had previously banned anyone from using the space because of safety red flags.

Boikie Mampuru, the Provincial Chief Inspector, pointed out that the shutdown came down to dodgy electrical work, biological hazards from water damage, and ceiling panels that were about to fall apart.

Mampuru mentioned the department plans to check out the facility again after 60 days, so an inspection should be happening pretty soon.

Lebo Mofokeng, the municipal spokesperson, hasn’t gotten back to media requests that came in after the closure.
