Founded on January 19, 1943, during the height of challenging global times, the institution originally opened as Witbank’s first dual-medium high school, welcoming an inaugural cohort of 302 learners guided by a dedicated faculty of ten under founding principal Mr. G.J. Potgieter. As the town flourished through the mid-20th century, the campus expanded significantly, establishing boarding facilities and officially receiving its current name on October 16, 1954, in honor of General J.B.M. Hertzog.
