Jéan-Andre Jewellers – robbers still at large

Three suspects were shot and killed following a violent business robbery at Jéan-Andre Jewellers on 15 April 2026, after police and private security forces intercepted getaway vehicles in a swift response operation at Highveld Mall.

The robbery took place around 10 am when a group of around eight armed suspects stormed the jewellery outlet inside the Highveld Mall, held a security guard and an employee at gunpoint, and fled with an undisclosed quantity of jewellery.

Police say the suspects attempted to flee in multiple vehicles, but were quickly tracked and intercepted shortly after leaving the shopping centre.

During the confrontation that followed, three of the suspects were fatally shot, while the remaining suspects fled the scene and are still at large.

Police confirmed that firearms and stolen goods were recovered shortly after the incident.

They recovered three pistols, a rifle, and ammunition used during the robbery.

A Toyota RAV4 fitted with false registration plates was also seized and is believed to have been one of the getaway vehicles.

Some of the stolen jewellery was recovered inside the abandoned vehicle.

Police spokesperson Mavela Masondo said the recovered weapons would be subjected to forensic testing.

‘All firearms recovered at the scene will be sent for ballistic analysis to determine whether they were used in other criminal activities.’

Acting Provincial Commissioner, Zeph Mkhwanazi, said the swift response by law enforcement and private security prevented further escalation.

‘Police and private security responded swiftly to the scene and managed to intercept the suspects shortly after they fled the mall. During the incident, three suspects were fatally wounded, while others managed to escape and are still being sought.’

He added that the operation reflected ongoing efforts to clamp down on violent organised crime in the province.

‘We will continue to work with all our law enforcement partners to ensure that those responsible for violent crimes are brought to justice.’

IPID investigation underway

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has confirmed it will investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the three suspects, in line with standard procedure whenever fatalities occur during police-related incidents.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the suspects were killed in a shootout with police or private security officers.

‘A case of business robbery has been opened, and IPID will investigate the circumstances that led to the death of the three suspects,’ Masondo added.

Manhunt for remaining suspects

A manhunt is underway for the remaining suspects, who are believed to still be armed and dangerous.

Police have urged members of the public to come forward with any information that may assist in locating the fugitives.

Investigations into the robbery are ongoing.
