Walking in Faith: Walter Bird’s Marathon Mission

Most people with a heavy medical chart would prefer a quiet afternoon on the couch with a good book. But 53-year-old Witbank resident Walter Bird isn’t most people. Trading caution for absolute conviction, he decided to turn his personal health battles into a bootstrap mission of hope for the elders of the community.

Dealing daily with heart conditions, high cholesterol, and Parkinson’s disease would make anyone want to slow down. This wasn’t merely a test of physical endurance, but a deeply personal act of faith aimed at raising critical funds to renovate the worn-out bathrooms at the Immergroen Old Age Home.

‘My wish is that every donation collected will help improve the lives of our elderly. They deserve to live with dignity, and if we can renovate their bathrooms, it will make a real difference’, says Bird.

It turns out that changing the world doesn’t always require a boardroom or a massive corporate budget—sometimes, it just takes one man, a wooden cross, and a stubborn refusal to let age or illness get in the way of a good deed.

‘I believe that, in the name of Jesus, I will overcome every illness. My faith is stronger than my circumstances, and I know God has called me to this mission’, Bird says.
