Public Safety Concerns in Witbank

Local police have cautioned residents to maintain heightened awareness, particularly while moving in public.

Three individuals fell victim to armed robbery across various locations within Witbank, resulting in the loss of personal valuables including mobile devices.

According to law enforcement, the initial occurrence took place on October 14 at approximately 10:00 on Pioneer Street in Klipfontein, when a pedestrian was approached by an individual requesting directions to an ATM. Upon the pedestrian’s refusal to accompany him, the assailant produced a firearm, directed it toward the victim, and demanded his wallet and cellular telephone.

Following the surrender of his belongings, the victim was instructed to depart without turning around.

During the same timeframe, a female resident was reportedly abducted and robbed on Watermeyer Street.

The woman reported to authorities that she had been walking alongside a companion when a charcoal-colored Renault Clio approached with its windows lowered.

One of two occupants allegedly brandished a firearm against the woman and compelled her into the vehicle. The perpetrators subsequently transported her to an undisclosed location, relieved her of her possessions, and abandoned her on the roadside following the journey.

A formal abduction charge was subsequently filed.

Witbank Police Station spokesperson, Warrant Officer David Ratau indicated that investigations into these matters are ongoing.

“We encourage community members to exercise caution, especially when traveling unaccompanied or when encountering unfamiliar individuals. Furthermore, refrain from exhibiting valuable possessions such as mobile devices in public spaces, maintain situational awareness, and, whenever feasible, travel in groups,” stated Ratau.
